Flamingo, Florida received its name in 1893 when settlers had to choose a name for their new post office. They chose to name it after the flamingo which was the most distinctive bird seen in the area. Although flamingos didn’t actually nest in Florida, large flocks from Cuba and the Bahamas once frequented the area. Their presence gradually declined, and by 1902 the birds were no longer seen in significant numbers. The post office closed in 1909.
